How this is calculated

Length × width × depth × quantity. Add your allowance, divide by one bag’s volume, then round up to whole bags.

Use the actual depth you plan to fill, not the full wall height if you need to leave a watering gap. An allowance adds extra material; it does not predict how your specific soil will settle.

A LITTLE GUIDANCE

Less effort. Clearer results.

01 / Raised bed soil

Raised bed soil calculator

  1. Choose metric or US units, then enter the inside length and width or diameter of your bed.
  2. Enter the depth you need to fill, the number of matching beds and the volume printed on one bag.
  3. Read the live volume and bag count. Add a bag price for a budget, then copy or download your shopping list.

02 / Potting mix

Potting soil calculator

  1. Choose a rectangular planter or a round pot. Measure the inside dimensions in centimeters or inches.
  2. For a tapered round pot, enter its top diameter, bottom diameter and the depth you will fill. Enter the number of matching pots.
  3. Set your potting mix bag size and optional price. Copy the live shopping list or download it for your trip.

The round pot calculation uses a conical frustum. A rectangular planter is treated as a straight-sided box. Root balls, drainage inserts and existing soil reduce the amount of new mix needed; subtract their volume separately.

03 / Mulch coverage

Mulch calculator

  1. Enter the length and width or diameter of the area to cover. Use the quantity field for identical areas.
  2. Choose the spread depth and the volume of one mulch bag. All dimensions stay visible beside their units.
  3. Use the live bag total for bagged mulch, or the cubic yards and cubic meters for a bulk supplier. Download a shopping list when ready.

This is a geometric volume estimate. Choose the layer depth for your material and planting conditions, and measure only the area you will actually cover. The calculator does not subtract paths, trunks or gaps.

FAQ

A few useful things to know.

How much soil fills a 2 m × 1 m raised bed?

At a 30 cm fill depth, it holds 600 liters. With 40-liter bags and no allowance, that is 15 bags. A 5% allowance raises the purchase requirement to 630 liters, or 16 bags.

Does this calculate a soil recipe?

No. It calculates total volume. Use your chosen soil recipe or the guidance for the plants you plan to grow to divide that volume into ingredients.

Can I calculate multiple beds?

Yes. The quantity field multiplies identical beds. If your beds have different sizes, calculate each size separately and combine the shopping lists.

Why enter two diameters for a round pot?

Many pots narrow toward the bottom. Using only the top diameter overestimates the mix. Top and bottom diameters give a more realistic tapered-container estimate.

What if my pot has straight sides?

Enter the same top and bottom diameter for a round straight-sided pot. For a rectangular straight-sided planter, select the rectangular option.

Does the estimate include a plant’s root ball?

No. It estimates the empty container volume to your chosen fill depth. Existing soil and the root ball take up space, so you may need less new mix.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. The calculator shows both so you can compare bagged and bulk mulch.

How many 2 cubic foot bags cover 108 square feet at 3 inches?

The area needs 27 cubic feet, or one cubic yard. Divide by 2 cubic feet per bag and round up: 14 bags with no extra allowance.

Can I use this for gravel or bark?

The volume geometry also applies to a uniform layer of bark or gravel. It does not calculate weight, compaction, load capacity or how much a supplier sells by the ton.
